Home Studies
What is a Home Study?
A home study is a required, multi-step process that educates and prepares individuals and couple for their adoption journey. It serves as a guiding tool, helping prospective adoption parents feel confident in their ability to parent an adopted child and provide a safe, nurturing home. Adoption Options partners with families to create a home study report that reflects who they are, sharing their family origin, significant life experiences, and the family they hope to create or expand through adoption.
The home study process includes:
- 3 – 4 meetings, including a home visit by the adoption professional working with your family.
- Discussions about your family of origin and life experiences that have shaped who you are and the type of parent you with to become.
- Verification of employment and personal references.
- Reviews of necessary documents like birth certificates, criminal background checks, and financial information.
Why do i need a home study?
All adoptive families in Rhode Island and Massachusetts are required to complete a home study through a licensed adoption agency prior to adopting. Adoption Options is a licensed nonprofit adoption agency able to serve families in Rhode Island and communities in Massachusetts that are within a 40-mile radius of Providence.
In addition to meeting state requirements, a home study serves as a valuable guide, helping prospective adoptive parents navigate the adoption process with confidence and prepare to provide a safe, nurturing home for a child.
How long will a home study take to complete?
The adoption home study process typically takes between two to three months to complete, depending on individual circumstances and how quickly required documentation is submitted. To help speed up your home study, prospective adoptive parents are encouraged to begin gathering important documents early, including birth and marriage certificates, financial records, and personal and employer references.
Adoption Options will provide a complete list of required home study documents during your free consultation, ensuring you are fully prepared for each step of the adoption process.

Post Adoption Services

Post-Placement Visits and Supervision
Adoption Options provides post-placement visits and supervision for adoptive families in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Post-placement supervision is a required part of the adoption process and includes in-home visits to assess the child’s health and development, as well as the adjustment of both the child and parents to their new family environment.
The number of required post-placement visits varies by state (and in some cases, international adoption) and is determined by the state where the adoption is finalized. After each visit, our adoption professionals complete a detailed post-placement report, which is shared with the family and all parties involved in finalizing the adoption.
Ongoing Support and Resources
In addition to fulfilling adoption requirements, post-placement visits provide an opportunity for adoptive families to receive guidance, ask questions, and access valuable resources. Our experienced adoption professionals offer continued support, including referrals to community services when needed. This commitment to care extends beyond the completion of formal post-placement services.
