May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and the resources available to support those who may be struggling. As a community, it is important to come together and support each other in prioritizing our mental health and well-being.

One of the most important things we can do is to reduce the stigma around mental illness. This means treating it like any other health issue and not making assumptions or judgments about those who are struggling.

Here are some ways to raise awareness about mental health in your community:

  • Share information: Share information about Mental Health Awareness Month and resources available for support through social media, local newspapers, community bulletin boards, and other platforms.
  • Start a conversation: Encourage open and honest conversations with family, friends, and colleagues. Talk about the importance of taking care of ourselves and the role of seeking professional help when needed.
  • Organize events: Organize events that promote mental health, such as workshops on stress management or mindfulness, or support groups for individuals who may be struggling. Click here to see a list of May events in RI.
  • Educate others: Educate others about the warning signs of mental illness and how to access resources. Encourage individuals to seek help if they are struggling and provide them with information on where they can get help.
  • Support mental health organizations: Support local mental health organizations by volunteering or donating. These organizations often provide valuable resources and support to individuals who may be struggling.

Mental health impacts all of us, and it’s important to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you or someone you know is struggling, resources are available to help. Rhode Island has made significant efforts to promote mental health awareness and to provide resources for those who need help.

The Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals (BHDDH) is the state agency responsible for mental health services. They offer a range of programs and services to support those with mental illness, including crisis intervention, outpatient treatment, and support groups. In addition to state resources, many local organizations and other initiatives in Rhode Island promote mental health awareness. The Mental Health Association of Rhode Island is a non-profit organization that works to improve mental health services and supports in the state. They offer educational resources, advocacy, and support for those with mental illnesses and their families.

The Rhode Island chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is another organization that provides education, advocacy, and support. They offer educational programs and resources for those seeking help. (Click here to listen to our past JCS Connect Session with guest speaker Beth Lamarre, Director of NAMI Rhode Island)

The Counseling Center at JCS is here for all as a resource for mental health support as well. Whether you or someone you know is struggling with depression, anxiety, or any other mental health concern, our team of compassionate and experienced counselors are available to provide the help, support groups, and resources needed to support those on their mental health journey.

By continuing to support initiatives and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, we can continue to improve the well-being of our communities. Let’s work together as a community to raise awareness and support each other in caring for our mental health.
