September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a crucial time to raise awareness, offer support, and provide hope to those affected by suicide. Despite being a critical public health issue that affects millions worldwide, suicide remains stigmatized and often silenced. This month, and beyond, it’s essential to break that silence and provide the support needed to prevent these tragedies and support those in need.

Suicide is complex and deeply personal, affecting not only individuals but also their families, friends, and communities. The statistics are stark: men are nearly four times more likely to die by suicide than women, even though more women attempt it. Lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers, and transgender individuals are 12 times more likely to attempt suicide than the general population. Additionally, 10% of young adults report experiencing suicidal thoughts in the past year. These numbers highlight the urgent need for increased awareness, education, and prevention efforts.

Here are more ways you can make a difference:

  • Educate Yourself and Others: Learn the warning signs of suicide, which include increased alcohol or drug use, aggressive behavior, withdrawal from loved ones, mood swings, impulsive behavior, and saying goodbye to friends and family. In a suicide crisis, your response can be life-saving. Don’t be afraid to ask direct questions like, “Do you have a plan for how you would kill yourself?” Remove means such as guns, knives, or pills, and express support and concern without judgment. Stay calm and patient, avoiding arguments or debates. Empathy and a listening ear can provide hope in a moment of darkness. Share this knowledge—it can save lives.
  • Reach Out: If you or someone you know is struggling, seek help.
